These paintings explore a collection of exterior spaces, sourced from various films. They make use of ambiguous manmade structures to define the space, however the settings are vague and it is often unclear whether they are internal or external. They do not feel like depictions of reality, but instead suggest the pretence of film sets and a fabricated world depicted for cinematic effect.
The handling of the paint draws attention to the construction of the paintings themselves. There is a greater sense of the materiality of the medium in these works that both highlights the process of making the painting, but also appears to contradict and subvert the figurative aspects within the scene. By constructing the paintings with hue relationships, rather than tonal ones, there is a greater sense of colour-field and radiance, so that the image has to come through the colour.
